The colors in the Matrix Opal II were inspired by a stone of the same name. The silk was hand painted, and then a grid was stitched independently in fine Egyptian cotton thread from Italy before it was hand stitched onto the silk. Notice how the thread color makes a smooth transition from a luminous pale yellow in the center to black at the outer edges. The color shift in the grid works very effectively with the brilliant colors of the silk.
You can see the details of the initial stitching as it is worked on Solvy; a gelatin based water-soluble material that provides excellent stability and reinforcement. After the stitching is completed, the work is soaked in water and the gooey stuff disappears down the drain as it melts away.
